Cyberia

I remembered a book today that I haven't read in full since I was about 13. It's called Cyberia, by Douglas Rushkoff. I picked it up again today because some of the things that we were talking about in weblogs and wikis made me think of it. This book was my first introduction to the world of the internet, drugs, and role-playing games (not necessarily in combination, mind you). When I was young there was something that facsinated me about the people in this book, how they treated the internet and the world as a huge community and a place to play and explore and create and change. It was written in 1994, and wikis aren't mentioned by name, but that's the sort of feeling I get from my brief forays into that world.

I guess I don't have anything well-thought-out to say about the book. It's nearly impossible to find a copy since it's been out of print for close to a decade (I've got one, thank god, hard-won from Barnes and Noble's Used Book resource). I picked it up today, opened to a random page, and read enough to make me want to sit down with the book again, now that I'm older and (hopefully) wiser. If only I can find the time between homework and the rest of the stuff I do... maybe this weekend.
