News from the semi-cubicle

In the past three weeks, I have learned a great truth in life: scientists should not be allowed to write and edit for themselves. They are BAD at it. Same goes for science students. Also, several of the ones I've read need to have a little talk with someone about professional voice in their writing.

And I swear, if I have to read about one more experiment involving mouse fibroblasts or blacklegged ticks, I will hurt something important to me.

In other news, I dropped my German class today, and I feel only very slightly bad about it. I know it was the right decision, despite the fact that I really hate the idea of quitting anything. I'm still a full-time student, and now I have some time to actually get some writing done, as well as other things (Tai Chi? Tin whistle? The possibilities are endless!)

We had a big long discussion about science writing and scientists who write their own papers in my editing class last semester. Most science writers on a larger level, say professors or scholars or researchers, have friends or paid editors to read through their papers before they get sent to publication. Some don't, though, and those are the ones who drive us writers and editors bonkers. But at least they tried, right? No one said they had to try very hard, though.
